How to implement a Shopping Cart Abandonment Survey

The number of online shoppers who abandon their shopping cart can be huge, anywhere from 20% to 70%.

This article will show you how , and why, to implement a shopping cart abandonment survey.

Some common reasons for visitors to abandon your shopping cart include:

  • Comparison shopping
  • Confusion over the shopping process
  • Impatience over slow or too detailed pages
  • Mistrust about who they are giving their credit card details to

Read more about these reasons

Implementing a shopping cart abandonment survey can show you which area of your site is causing your visitors to leave, and how to minimise this.

Stop visitors leaving by:

  • Giving a phone number
  • Showing credit card symbols and third-party secure signs, such as VeriSign or Thawte (see below)
  • Using good tracking software such as Visitor Stats to see your mistakes, and correcting them
  • Offering multiple payment methods. Credit Card, Cheque, PayPal, the more the better.

Of course, you need to know which part of your website isn't working, and why visitors are leaving. That's when we use a shopping cart abandonment survey.

Implementing the abandonment survey on your website

Lets 'trigger' the abandonment survey as a popup if someone leaves our shopping cart.

We need to be careful not to trigger the popup too early, or for legitimate visitors who are completing their order. (Everyone hates popups... unfortunately we are going to have to use them here)

The abandonment survey popup should happen if someone gets to our 'checkout' page, but doesn't register or login. Put the popup code on this page.

There are two parts to the code, one in the <head> tag, and one in the <body> tag.

1. Copy and paste this into your page before the </head> tag:

2. Copy and paste this INTO the <body> tag:

That should do the trick!

Testing and Advanced use of the Abandonment Survey

Testing
I have prepared a couple of test files that you can use to test this.

Some visitors have popup blockers. Read my other article for a way around this.
